Assumption of Mary
The Assumption of Mary (Asunción de la Virgen) on 15 August is a Catholic solemnity and a Spain-wide public holiday in the summer calendar.

It celebrates Mary’s assumption body and soul into heaven; in Spain it is both a religious feast and a major mid-August day off.
Origin and history
Long liturgical tradition; dogma defined in 1950 by Pius XII (Munificentissimus Deus); retained as a national labour holiday in the calendar published in the BOE, Spain’s official state gazette.
